Sonic the Hedgehog 3 grossed $492 million worldwide on a production budget of $122 million, becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise and the second highest-grossing video game film at the time of its release. 

In the end, the film brought Paramount approximately $123 million in profit, placing it as the 10th most profitable film of 2024. 

It also boasts an impressive 85% critic score and a staggering 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated entry in the franchise. 

Keanu Reeves as Shadow — The Move That Changed Everything

The film's secret weapon was hiding in plain sight. The introduction of Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog proved to be a massive draw for audiences, with the 13–24 demographic showing up at 64% over opening weekend. 

Sonic, Knuckles and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary — Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance to stop him and protect the planet. 

Reeves' casting — first teased on TikTok in August 2024 — sent the internet into a frenzy months before release and delivered on every ounce of its promise on screen.

Jim Carrey's Double Role — Divisive but Unforgettable

Another major draw was Jim Carrey playing double roles — both Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather, the head of Project Shadow. 

The reception was predictably split. Some critics felt one Jim Carrey was already a lot — two was overwhelming. Others found it to be exactly the kind of unhinged energy the franchise thrives on. Either way, Carrey won Favorite Villain at the 2025 Kids' Choice Awards  — proof that audiences, especially younger ones, absolutely loved every second of it.

Beating Disney at Its Own Game

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opened at #1 with $60 million from 3,761 North American theaters, defeating Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King — which opened at just $35 million despite costing over $200 million to produce and market. 

The win was deeply symbolic. A video game adaptation based on a blue cartoon hedgehog had just outrun the most powerful studio in Hollywood on its own holiday turf.

A Franchise Worth $350 Million to Paramount

The numbers go beyond the box office. The entire Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is worth around $350 million to Paramount — a figure that includes Paramount+ ad revenue, subscriber acquisition, and ongoing streaming revenues tied to the Sonic brand. 

The first Sonic film made just over $300 million worldwide, the second concluded at just over $400 million, and the third now sits at $492 million  — a franchise that has grown with every single installment.

What's Next: Sonic 4 and the Post-Credits Secrets

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is already slated for March 19, 2027. Fans can look forward to the debut of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, both teased in Sonic 3's post-credits scene. Shadow, whose apparent death shocked audiences, was revealed to have survived in a second post-credits stinger — confirming his return in the next installment. 

Kristen Bell has already been announced as joining the cast of Sonic 4, voicing Amy Rose.  And despite his character's dramatic end in Sonic 3, Jim Carrey stated in January 2025 that he was "open to the idea" of returning for the fourth film, provided that the premise interested him.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is everything a franchise threequel should be — bigger, bolder, better reviewed, and more profitable than anything that came before it. It proved that Keanu Reeves voicing a brooding black hedgehog is, somehow, box office gold. It beat Disney at Christmas. And it left audiences hungry for more.
