Marvel's Wolverine: Insomniac's Most Brutal Game Yet Is Almost Here

Five Years in the Making

Marvel's Wolverine was officially announced in September 2021, alongside Marvel's Spider-Man 2, during the PlayStation Showcase event — with creative director Brian Horton and game director Cameron Christian at the helm.

The game is planned as the first in a trilogy focused on the X-Men, similar to the Marvel's Spider-Man series, with Insomniac entering a new licensing deal with Marvel to produce X-Men video games exclusively.

The road to release wasn't without turbulence. A devastating ransomware attack on Insomniac Games in December 2023 compromised various development documents and personal employee information — and leadership changes followed, with Marcus Smith taking over as creative director after Brian Horton departed to join Xbox.  Despite everything, the game is on track.

Logan's Story: A Dark Global Thriller

Logan is voiced by actor Liam McIntyre, who taps into the rage, pain, and nuances of this iconic character. In this story, he is on the hunt to uncover the secrets of a dark past that keeps eluding him — and in this world, he'll have to dig his claws deep to pull any shred of information that may lead to answers.

Confirmed locations include Canada, Tokyo, and Madripoor, with a narrative tone positioned as a global thriller.  Familiar faces will appear along the way: players will encounter the elusive Mystique and the brutish Omega Red — some will fight alongside Logan against all odds, while others will unleash all-out attacks.

Combat Like You've Never Seen in a Marvel Game

Insomniac is not pulling any punches — literally. Marvel's Wolverine is built on Insomniac staples like fast, fluid, and ferocious combat, exhilarating action-packed set pieces, robust accessibility features, and a gripping story that taps into the core tenets of one of the most compelling comic book characters of all time — but Logan's signature spin on heroism is much darker and more brutal than you might expect from Insomniac.

The gameplay centers around fast, fluid melee combat, supported by a Berserker Rage mechanic and DualSense features like adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.  One developer on the team even specifically praised the detailed "blood tech" built for the game — and another said the whole experience delivers a level of visual detail Insomniac has never achieved before.

A PS5 Exclusive Built From the Ground Up

Marvel's Wolverine is confirmed exclusively for PlayStation 5, with additional optimizations for PS5 Pro. A PlayStation 4 version is off the table — the game was designed from the ground up for current-gen hardware, and ports for Nintendo Switch 2 or Xbox Series X are not planned.

The game is positioned as a darker, more violent counterpoint to Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man series — a standalone story focused on Wolverine's past, his rage, and his place in a grittier corner of the Marvel world.

Shared Universe, Standalone Story

Marvel's Wolverine is a standalone entry in the Marvel's Spider-Man series, telling an original self-contained story that shares continuity with Insomniac's other Marvel games  — meaning players who have followed Peter Parker and Miles Morales will feel the connective tissue, while newcomers can jump in without any prior knowledge.

What's Still Coming Before Launch

The best news? There's still more to be revealed. More details on pre-orders, editions, and gameplay are expected in spring 2026 — with fresh looks at the story, characters, and mechanics all on the horizon.

With its official launch date now confirmed, Marvel's Wolverine stands out as one of the most eagerly awaited games on the PS5 calendar — its status as a PlayStation exclusive adding to the anticipation and giving PS5 owners a major reason to celebrate.

Conclusion

Marvel's Wolverine is shaping up to be everything fans of the character have always wanted — a mature, brutal, globe-trotting story told by the best superhero game studio in the business. With Insomniac's pedigree, Logan's iconic rage, and a September 15 release date firmly locked in, this is one of 2026's most unmissable games.

Forget the web-slinging. Bub, the claws are out.

Adamantium. Berserker rage. September 15. Ready?
