The Last of Us Season 3: Abby Takes Center Stage — And HBO Is Breaking the Rules of Television

Abby's Story — The Ultimate Risk

Season 3 takes place from Abby's perspective and runs concurrently to the story told in Season 2, which was told from Ellie's point of view. This is faithful to how it was done in the game. Characters who were killed in Season 2 will be featured in Season 3, but now with significantly more depth.

Sole showrunner Craig Mazin thought the change was risky but felt HBO executives "understand that this show is going to be a different show every season." The writers considered interlacing Ellie and Abby's stories throughout the seasons but Mazin wanted to maintain "the genetics of how this story functions." He thought they were "breaking quite a few rules" of television — but felt "that is the point."

A Creative Shakeup Behind the Scenes

In July 2025, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann announced he was stepping away from The Last of Us on HBO to focus on the studio's upcoming game projects — including writing and directing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet — along with his responsibilities as Studio Head.

Craig Mazin, who served as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Druckmann in Seasons 1 and 2, is now the sole showrunner for Season 3, joined in the writers' room by Ryan James — who worked on the games — and other collaborators.

The Cast: Old Faces, New Depths, Shocking Additions

The returning ensemble is exceptional. Returning cast includes Kaitlyn Dever, Bella Ramsey, Isabella Merced, Gabriel Luna, and Jeffrey Wright. Additionally, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, and Spencer Lord have all been promoted to series regular status for Season 3.

The new additions are equally exciting:

Patrick Wilson steps into the crucial role of Jerry — Abby's father and the Firefly surgeon whose fate at the hands of Joel sets off the entire central revenge plot of the story. Jason Ritter joins as Hanley, a Washington Liberation Front soldier.

Michelle Mao will star as Yara and Kyriana Kratter — known from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew — will play Lev, two siblings whose story becomes deeply intertwined with Abby's journey.

Clea DuVall will portray a Seraphite, and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. is taking on the role of Manny, following Danny Ramirez's departure due to scheduling conflicts.

Patrick Wilson as Jerry — The Most Important Casting of the Season

Of all the new additions, Patrick Wilson's casting carries the most narrative weight. Wilson is set to play Dr. Jerry Anderson — the surgeon killed by Joel in the Season 1 finale. The additions of Wilson and Ritter to the cast signal a major expansion of the show's narrative, moving past Joel's death and delving deeper into the motivations and backstories of key characters like Abby. This could help provide more context and nuance around the controversial events of Season 2.

In other words: Season 3 is going to make you understand — and possibly even sympathize with — the character millions of viewers initially hated.

Production: Bigger, Bolder, More Ambitious

Principal photography began in British Columbia on March 2, 2026, with production set to conclude on November 27, 2026. The WLF base — partly constructed for the second-season finale but mostly created using visual effects — is set to be fully built for the third season, based on Seattle's Lumen Field.

The season is set to feature more action sequences, continuing a trend from Season 2. It will also show more of Isaac — played by Jeffrey Wright — and his leadership style, while Ellie will have a smaller role than in previous seasons due to the perspective shift.

The Final Season? HBO Leaves It Open

While HBO initially hinted at a four-season lifespan for the show, the network has now deferred to the showrunners on whether Season 3 will be the final chapter. HBO chief Casey Bloys stated: "It certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners."

One heartbreaking footnote: Catherine O'Hara had been set to reprise her role as Gail before her passing in January 2026.

When Can We Watch It?

HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed the show will probably arrive in 2027  — with a filming wrap in late November 2026 suggesting a spring or summer 2027 premiere is the most realistic target.

The Verdict: The Boldest Season Yet

The Last of Us Season 3 is shaping up to be the most ambitious, most divisive, and potentially most rewarding chapter of the entire series. By fully committing to Abby's perspective — and building out the characters and world around her with an extraordinary new cast — Craig Mazin is making good on the promise that this show will never play it safe.

Season 3 won't just challenge its characters. It will challenge its audience.

Coming to HBO in 2027.
